Heritage at Risk

The grade II* former Assize Courts in Devizes is a fine building that has long needed a new use.  It has been empty for 30 years and increasing neglected.

Working with the Wilshire Museum and Wiltshire Council the Trust has facilitated the establishment of a Devizes Assize Court Trust that will now take forward a plan to rescue the building and create an expanded new home for the Wiltshire Museum.

Some £10 million wil be needed to bring this to fruition so the hard work starts now.  To see the project and how you can help go to

who we are

The Trust was formed in 1967 to celebrate the remarkable legacy of historic buildings in Wiltshire and to promote their conservation and reuse.

It is a Registered Charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee established "to preserve property and buildings of architectural and historical interest in the county for the benefit of the nation".

what we do

The aim of the Trust is to rescue neglected or derelict buildings and provide them with a sustainable long-term future. To achieve this the Trust seeks to purchase buildings at risk, repair them and sell them on, using the proceeds of one project to finance the next.

Buildings that are difficult to reuse or expensive to repair are often unattractive to private buyers, especially where the cost of the work exceeds the value of the building on completion, and this is where the Trust can step in.

As a charity the Trust is able to access grants that are not available to the private sector or to local authorities. Similarly there are times when the value of a building and its potential are unrecognised and an independent assessment can open up unforeseen opportunities.
